Access to quality healthcare is a fundamental human right for everyone in the world, including those in Africa. Many public healthcare systems across Africa face significant challenges.
Despite decades of efforts by governments, international organizations and private sectors, many healthcare challenges remain to be solved to provide quality healthcare for every citizen in Africa.
It is therefore not surprising that many Africans travel abroad, mainly to Europe, North America, and Asia, for medical care. In 2016, Africans spent over $6 billion on medical tourism abroad. (“Medical tourism 2022: Africa potential” report).
There is no reason for Africa to continue facing the challenges of an underperforming healthcare system. On the contrary, Africa’s healthcare sector has immense economic potential and can benefit from advanced healthcare technologies, global expertise, foreign investment, and innovation to address healthcare challenges and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
With more than 15 years of research and field experience, the HH International Team proposes an innovative and practical solution to address healthcare challenges in Africa: the establishment of Global Integrated Healthcare (GH) Towns and Regional Hospitals across Africa in partnership with leading international companies and healthcare organizations.
This preliminary report introduces the vision and concept of the Global Integrated Healthcare Town project and highlights its potential benefits for participating countries. Detailed implementation strategies, investment frameworks, and partnership opportunities will be presented at the GH Town Investment Forum.
WHY IS AN INTEGRATED GLOBAL HUB NEEDED FOR CHRONIC ILLNESSES?
Today, despite significant advances in medical science and technology, millions of people around the world continue to suffer from chronic illnesses that are not easily managed by conventional treatments and medications alone.
The word “chronic illness” clearly highlights the complexity and difficulty of managing these conditions through current conventional medicine and treatments
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), NCDs account for approximately 71% of all deaths globally. As of the latest data, it is estimated that over 1.5 billion people globally are living with at least one chronic illness.
The prevalence of these diseases are rising due to factors such as ageing populations, urbanization, and lifestyle changes.
In Africa, the burden of chronic illnesses is also increasing. The WHO reports that NCDs account for about 27% of all deaths in the region. It is estimated that around 40 million people in Africa are living with chronic conditions.
WHO emphasizes the need for stronger healthcare infrastructure, prevention, and integrated approaches to address this growing challenge.
