Overview
Acupuncture is a complementary therapy that may help manage various symptoms associated with cancer and its treatment. It is often used to alleviate pain, nausea, fatigue, and other side effects. Research suggests acupuncture can improve quality of life for cancer patients by addressing these symptoms, though more research is ongoing.
How Acupuncture Works:
Acupuncture involves stimulating specific points on the body, typically with thin needles, to influence the flow of energy (Qi) and promote healing. In the context of cancer, it’s thought to work by:
- Releasing endorphins: Acupuncture stimulates the release of natural pain-relieving substances in the body, like endorphins.
- Modulating nerve signals: It may affect the way the nervous system transmits pain signals.
- Reducing inflammation: Acupuncture may help reduce inflammation, which can contribute to pain and other symptoms.
Common Symptoms Acupuncture May Help With:
- Pain: Acupuncture is commonly used to manage cancer-related pain, including pain from tumors, surgery, or chemotherapy.
- Nausea and Vomiting: It can be effective in reducing chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting.
- Fatigue: Acupuncture may help alleviate cancer-related fatigue and improve energy levels.
- Hot Flashes: Some studies suggest it can reduce the frequency and severity of hot flashes, particularly in breast cancer patients.
- Anxiety and Depression: Acupuncture may have a positive impact on mood and emotional well-being.
- Other Symptoms: It may also be used to address dry mouth, breathlessness, and other side effects.
Important Considerations:
- Qualified Practitioners: It’s crucial to seek treatment from a qualified and experienced acupuncturist, especially when dealing with cancer.
Acupuncture for Cancer Pain and Related Symptoms
(Source: NIH, an official website of the U.S. government)
Cancer pain is one of most prevalent symptoms in patients with cancer. Acupuncture and related techniques have been suggested for the management of cancer pain. The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN®) guidelines for adult cancer pain recommends acupuncture, as one of integrative interventions, in conjunction with pharmacologic intervention as needed.
This review presents the latest available evidence regarding the use of acupuncture for cancer pain. It also provides “actionable” acupuncture protocols for specific cancer pain conditions and related symptoms in order to provide more clinically relevant solutions for clinicians and cancer patients with pain.
These conditions include postoperative cancer pain, postoperative nausea and vomiting, postsurgical gastroparesis syndrome, opioidinduced constipation, opioid-induced pruritus, chemotherapy-induced neuropathy, aromatase inhibitor-associated joint pain, and neck dissection-related pain and dysfunction.
Commonly Treated Conditions:
According to the National Institute of Health (NIH) and World Health Organization (WHO),
acupuncture is efficient in the treatment of these conditions:
Why people with cancer use it (Source: Cancer Research UK)
Medical research shows that acupuncture works by stimulating nerves. It releases the natural morphine-like substances (endorphins) in the spinal cord and brain. This relieves pain. Acupuncture also releases serotonin. Serotonin is a pain reliever which can promote a feeling of wellbeing. The release of these substances can reduce cancer symptoms.
People with cancer might have acupuncture to relieve sickness. This can be because of chemotherapy or other cancer drugs.
