Overview
Lymphedema is a condition characterized by localized swelling due to a compromised lymphatic system, often affecting arms or legs. It occurs when lymph fluid, which normally drains from tissues back into the bloodstream, accumulates, leading to swelling and potential tissue changes.
Causes:
- Primary lymphedema:
Can be inherited or develop due to genetic mutations affecting lymphatic system development. - Secondary lymphedema:
More common, develops due to damage or blockage of lymphatic vessels, often caused by: - Cancer and cancer treatment (surgery, radiation).
- Infections, particularly parasitic infections (e.g., elephantiasis).
- Trauma or injury.
- Obesity.
- Certain heart conditions or blood vessel issues.
Symptoms:
- Swelling in the affected area (arm, leg, etc.).
- Heaviness, fullness, or tightness in the affected limb.
- Skin changes, such as thickening, discoloration, or dimpling.
